BOOK PROJECT
In Between Us: How Queer Trans and Nonbinary Muslims Resist Intracommunity Marginalization (Forthcoming with Columbia University Press)
My book project examines the social and institutional barriers encountered by Queer Trans and Nonbinary (QTN) Muslims in mainstream queer and Muslim organizations. Rather than examine the psychological/individual tension between LGBTQ and Muslim identity, I advocate for research that highlights the institutional, cultural, and social relationships impacting QTN Muslims.
OTHER PROJECTS
LGBTQ Religious Activism (Co-edited with Jonathan Coley)
Our edited volume includes interdisciplinary voices to explain why and how LGBTQ religious people engage in activism and why studying this helps understand activism more broadly.
Cancel Culture and Social Change
In this new project, I look at how cancel/call out culture impacts activism, marginalization, and inequality. Click this link if you’re interested in participating.
What’s Next: Queer Trans and Nonbinary Muslim Refugees (QTNMR) in Canada
This project extends my 10+ years of research with QTN Muslims to include the voices of refugees. It compares the challenges faced by QTNMR in Toronto and Montréal and looks how oppressive systems contribute to such challenges.
